Internet Safety Assignment

1. I chose to read the article Mixed Signals in the June 2001 New Era.
2. One video resource I watched was McGruff the Crime Dog. He showed the cat Faux Paw going into a chat room and agreeing to meet with someone he didn't know. The cat was met by a huge dog that was supposed to be a small cat. The cat was saved, but was lucky to be saved. McGruff then gave advice about the Internet.
I also watched Katie's story about how she met a 22 year old guy online that wanted to stay at her house. She later had to testify against him.
I also watched a couple PBS videos about Greg and how he spent so much time online and couldn't stand to be away from his computer for very long. It talked about all the things that kids and teenagers do online like cyber bullying, relationships, post pictures, talk and be more obscene then they would in person.
3. My most important take aways from what I read and watched are that I need to be even more careful than I was before. I have only been into a chat room once and it was other friends, but I need to never go in one again. I also learned that I need to be pretty strict about the Internet with my children and to for sure limit their use with it. I also need to teach my children that they cannot give out any personal information whatsoever and to tell an adult if they come across something that they shouldn't.
4. i. He said that you need to have porn filters with passwords that your children do not know.
You are never supposed to give out personal information because phishers will try to look for passwords to try and steal your money.
Do not give out your credit card number unless you are positive that you trust the site.
ii. His reaction to what I shared for the most part was that he already knew what I was telling him. He works with computers for his major so he knows a lot about internet safety. He told me a way to close inappropriate sites without shutting your computer off.
iii. What surprised me about his reaction was that he knew so much more than I did. I thought that he wouldn't know that when you click on a pornographic site and tried to close that it would cycle through more pictures. He didn't know that the definition for explicit material was not given to music companies just that they had to have an explicit label.
iiii. I think that he will be more careful about giving out his personal information and that he will download legally appropriate and uplifting music. He will also think about what he wants to do with the internet regarding his children.

Technology with Little Children

I learned that there are many different way to implement technology in the classroom that i even appropriate for little children. I loved that in the Spider video they made a website that they shared with a class in another state. I thought that it was so awesome that they got to interact with students in a different state and to see the various spiders in a different part of the U.S. It looked relatively easy to make the website to share the information with the other class.

I learned that in using a book you can draw pictures on the computer to illustrate and create a new that book that is based on the original book. I thought that it was a great idea to have the students write a new book and to use the computers to draw their pictures. Sometimes it can be monotonous to alway draw pictures, but doing it on the computers gives it a new exciting spin on it.

I learned that you can have students create a slide show to teach others about certain subjects, such as habitats. It's an excellent idea to let the students teach and this is a wonderful opportunity to do that. I learned that students are not just limited to power points for what they can use and be exposed to. I need to be more conscious of their desire to use technology.

Technology in the Classroom

My initial reaction to the amount of technology that my mentor teacher had access to was that it was a minimal amount. I think I am used to BYU having a projector for power points in every classroom and Mac laptops for the computers. In the classroom I am in she only has 3 computers to work with and they look pretty old. The school only has 2 projectors that they all share and she doesn't have a t.v. in her classroom. I was kind of surprised at that. She doesn't ever use technology besides the 3 computers, which is understandable since she does not really have access to it. She's a great teacher without technology though.
I have completed both 1 and 2 parts.

Science Projects that I Viewed

I learned that I can implement microscopes to study living and non-living things and to study soil. There really are so many things that you can discover with science just by using the technology that we have today. I think it's amazing that children can look at the moon phases or any other night time feature so easily. They can record their findings so much easier with Stellarium and can better see things using the microscope. I think using the temperature probes would also be helpful to learn about temperature in a visual way.

Science Project Planning

The experiment that I want my students to participate in is to use Stellarium to draw on a calendar that I give them what the moon looks like for a month. Every day they will get on Stellarium and look up what the moon is going to look like that night. Then they will report their findings and discuss it in groups.
The content I will be focusing on is:
Standard 1
Students will understand that the shape of Earth and the moon are spherical and that Earth rotates on its axis to produce the appearance of the sun and moon moving through the sky.
Objective 2
Describe the movement of Earth and the moon and the apparent movement of other bodies through the sky.
b.Use a chart to show that the moon orbits Earth approximately every 28 days.
The pedagogy that this science experiment will help develop is that students will be able to observe and make a chart of the moon for one month. The students will acquire the data about the moon and then process it by looking at their findings to see that the moon orbits every 28 days.
I will have my students do a couple of extra days besides 28 so that they can see that there is a pattern. They will be able to use this data to create an explanation of how the moon orbits. The pedagogy of observing, making a chart, processing, and analyzing. This pedagogy is a good fit with the content because in order to see that the moon orbits every 28 days you need to be able to observe, make a chart and analyze it to see a pattern.
Stellarium is an easy way for the students to physically see the moon every night. Sometimes at night it is not possible to see the moon, but with Stellarium there won't be any cloud covers and if a student forgets they can just look up one of the nights that already has passed. This tool works well with the content of observing the moon because you have to be able to see the moon in order to see the pattern and the pedagogy is to observe and analyze so of course that's what you would be doing when looking at the moon on Stellarium.

These are the blogs that I looked at and commented on. They were fantastic!

I think an upside of implementing virtual tours in the classroom would be to grab the student's attention. A virtual tour is something out of the ordinary and it allows the student to go where you would not be able to take them. It's a great idea for when you are studying history and you want them to be able to see the places that they are studying about. I loved the idea that Brooke had to explore the setting of a book. This is a great way for them to understand the places that a character goes in a book. They can go at their own pace and do what they want at each location. It's a great tool!

A downside is that they may not put all of the layers or uncheck the layers that you do not want on. This will depreciate their experience with the location and they will not get everything out of it that you will want them to. Another downside is that there are usually a limited number of computers so not every student can do it at the same time, but eventually everyone can benefit.

Overall I want to use virtual tours in my classroom!

Indigenous People Virtual Tour

Here is a virtual tour of the Indigenous People.
Third Grade Social Studies
Standard 2
Students will understand cultural factors that shape a community.
Objective 2
Explain how selected indigenous cultures of the Americas have changed over time.
  1. Describe and compare early indigenous people of the Americas (e.g. Eastern Woodlands, Plains, Great Basin, Southwestern, Arctic, Incan, Aztec, Mayan).
I chose to do a virtual tour on the ancient indigenous people because I thought that this would be a fascinating way to get this subject started. I am interested in these people and I want to get my students excited by interacting with them in a way.
A google earth tour would be much better than any other instructional method to introduce this topic because it will easily catch the students' attention. They hopefully will be excited to learn more. This will allow them to explore the subject matter before we even really delve into it.

Planning of my virtual tour

Location Activity DescriptionGoogle Earth Content
1.Mayan Ruins
Draw the outline of the Mayan city. Indicate what each building is. Write about what goes on in each building.

Have the places of interest, and 3D buildings on
2.Incan Ruins
Have students decorate the doors to
their houses. Then describe why they
put the things that they did.

Have the roads, street view, terrain and 3D buttons on.

3.Plains in
North America

Have students gather sticks from home.
Then make tepees using the sticks and paper. Decorate the paper. Then disuss how you would feel taking down and putting up the tepee all the time so you could move.
Have the terrain and geographic button on.

4.Aztec Ruins

With clay that represents adobe create an Aztec home or pyramids making the clay into stones. Then discuss with a friend the structure that they created.

Have the terrain, street view and 3D buildings on.

I think that the most difficult thing about implementing digital photo stories in the classroom is that I'm not sure I have the hang of creating movies. I am afraid that they will ask me for help and that I will not how to give it to them. Another hard thing is that they might easily get off task while looking up pictures or music.

TPACK

I understand TPACK to be something that is technology and that we should be teaching it. I think it's important for us to understand technology because every day there are in advances in technology and if we want our students to be productive and useful citizens we need to teach them to keep up on what's happening in the world around them. If we are not educated in technology then we will fall behind. Our students will also fall behind from our lack of knowledge. I need to be well versed in every technological advance that can help me in the classroom.

Facebook video message

This is my asynchronous clip.

Most Important

I think the most important thing I learned was how to create google documents and how to post videos on the website. I think having the worksheets that we did in class or that we are going to do would be really beneficial to my students. They could either get a head start in class or they could get the worksheet if they missed class. I think the video was also important because if I show a video in class they might want to show their parents or watch it later. I could also put on videos that weren't in class so they could be learning more about the subject. I am excited that my students will be able to have resources when they are not in my classroom.

Creating a website

So I thought it was going to be really difficult to make a website. It actually wasn't that difficult though. The tutorials helped a lot though! I'm excited that I have this knowledge at my fingertips now. I'm sure that I will use it in my future classroom.

My Technology Experience

I had a really difficult time at first. When I was creating my moodle account I had a blonde moment because I thought surname meant Ms. or Mrs. so it came up as Kierstin Ms. So then I had to go and edit that. The blog was actually not that hard to create, which was good for me because I obviously struggle. So here I am writing this post. I just had to reset my password because it said that my e-mail was already in use. I did that and it was easy to create after that.
